Story
On the 9th December 2017, I will be jetting off to Nepal for 3 months to volunteer with VSO. Nepal is ranked as the twelfth poorest country in the world, and in 2015 alongside its neighbouring countries, it suffered from a huge earthquake that resulted in the deaths of nearly 9,000 people. Furthermore, if you have been following the news of late, you will be aware that areas of Nepal have recently been hit with severe floods, taking the lives of 1,200 people across Nepal, Northern India and Bangladesh.
My team and I will be working in Sankhu, an ancient town in Kathmandu valley, to help the locals prepare for and protect themselves from natural disasters that may occur in the future, so the community do not have to rebuild their lives and homes every time a natural disaster occurs.
Whilst there, I will be living with a host family amongst a poor community, and working every day alongside other volunteers in order to improve the lives of the communities living in this area.
VSO also work to improve many other aspects of life for the people in Nepal and around the world. Volunteers work on projects such as water sanitation, human rights, education and healthcare.
To raise funds for my trip, I will attempt to cycle from Warrington to Nepal Embassy in London (210 miles) in one day, as well as a sponsored head shave and many more.
