Story
6 women are killed by their partner or ex-partner every month in England and Wales.
The police receive a call relating to domestic abuse every 30 seconds.
Approximately 1.6 million women aged 16 to 74 suffered domestic abuse in England and Wales last year.
On 1st June 2022 I’m cycling from London to Paris in under 30 hours to raise money for Women’s Aid. Leaving Soho in the afternoon I’ll cycle 60 miles (96km) down to Newhaven for the 5 hour ferry crossing before setting off from Dieppe at 6am and riding through the French countryside for 106 miles (170km) before finally arriving at the Eiffel Tower. That’s 166 miles (267km) in under 30hr and with less than 4hr sleep. I’ll be cycling alone, unsupported, and it’s gonna be a really tough journey - mentally and physically. But nowhere near as hard as the pain and difficulties endured by so many victims of domestic abuse, and who so often suffer alone.
Women’s Aid help victims/survivors of domestic abuse, the majority of which are women. They also support children who have been victims of abuse or impacted by the abuse of their caregiver. Women’s Aid do amazing work across four key areas:
Domestic abuse affects so many women. It remains largely a hidden crime and most women seek Women’s Aid support in total confidence. By supporting Women’s Aid we might be helping a friend of friend, our neighbours, our colleagues, our best mates, our sisters, or even ourselves. You. Or me. Because no one ever dreams of needing Women’s Aid support, but so many of us have been or will be supported by this incredible organisation at some point in our lives.
Finally, in the time it will take me to cycle London to Paris, the police will have received approx. 3,600 calls relating to domestic abuse. And these are just the cases we know about. Your donation will enable Women’s Aid to continue their incredible work, fighting to eliminate domestic abuse and striving to create a world where every woman and child is safe.
