Story
I am joining #TEAMSIA and running the 2022 London marathon to raise money for the Spinal Injury Association (SIA).
I'm taking on the London Marathon for SIA to help people who are affected by spinal cord injury to live fulfilled lives. There are around 50,000 people living with a spinal cord injury (SCI) in the UK, and approximately 2,500 people sustain or acquire a spinal cord injury each year. That's one person every eight hours.
I am a Physiotherapist currently working at the London Spinal Cord Injury Centre and I have previously worked across Neuro Intensive Care and Neuro Rehabilitation settings at St. George’s Hospital. This has offered me the opportunity to work with many amazing people who face the life changing impact of a spinal cord injury.
I have experienced first-hand the work the SIA charity does to support people with spinal cord injuries and their families. Many of my patients have received peer support from the SIA during their hospital admission. The SIA has also supported them when making the daunting transition from hospital to home. For one of my patients getting the appropriate specialist care he required at home was challenging to organise - the SIA’s nurse specialists were on hand to provide training and support for him, his family and carers.
In 2020, the SIA supported 13,000 people with spinal cord injuries. How your donation can help the SIA:
£75 can help ensure funding packages are in place so everyone with spinal cord injury can lead a fulfilled life, safely and with dignity.
£50 can go towards regional support to those with a spinal cord as well as their family in the form of practical specialist advice and guidance from regional co-ordinators.
£25 helps cover the cost of SCI nurse specialist consultation.
Any donation, no matter how small is much appreciated. Please give what you can to support the amazing work the SIA do!
