Story
On Saturday 2nd July, I will be hiking up Scafell Pike setting off just before midnight in the dark aiming to reach the summit for sunrise, with my mam, auntie, cousins and some family friends. This will be in aid of PAPYRUS, The Prevention of Young Suicide Scheme, every donation made will be used by PAPYRUS to continue to save more young lives and help make our communities more suicide-safe. This cause is one that has always been an important one to us but couldn’t be more significantly closer to our hearts recently and is becoming a more prominent need in our community in West Cumbria. It is devastating each and every time hearing about a loss in our community and last month, our hearts were broken when we lost my 26 year old brother, Oliver, after he had taken his own life. This was after a long battle of him fighting against his emotional health and my family fighting hard for services to recognise his struggles. We are aiming for this health topic to be talked about more openly as suicide is the biggest killer of under 35s in the UK, yet it is still treated as a taboo subject. If anyone knows me they will know I am not the first person you’d think of that would climb Scafell Pike and my brother would be laughing at the thought, however if people could donate any amount of spare money they have, hopefully we can begin to raise more awareness about this topic and young people living with the risk of suicide can be supported and find hope for their futures. Thank you x
