Hello :)
Thanks for taking the time to visit my page.
Over the past two years I have spent 14 months volunteering with community based projects in rural villages in East Africa. It has become my passion to help the people of these communities with their struggles against poverty and also to use the experience to push my own boundaries to learn more about myself. To say it has been a life changing experience would be an understatement and I strive to continue this work to help other areas of the world.
In August I will start a 3 month placement with Voluntary Service Overseas in Zanzibar, an island off the coast of Tanzania. This is part of International Citizen Service (ICS), a project supported by the UK government which brings young people together to fight poverty and make a difference where it is needed most.
During my time in Zanzibar I will be working under their CASH (Commercial Agriculture for Smallholder Farmers in Horticulture) programme and working with their main partner organisation Umoja wa Wakulima wa Matunda na Mmboga Wadogowadogo (UWAMWIMA). - Yeah... that might take me a bit of time to learn exactly how to pronounce haha!
Basically the project is focused on improving the quality of life of small farmers on the island and helping them to increase the value of their production. I know from my previous trips to Malawi just how important crops are to the lives of Africans and the amount of hard work and dedication needed to be successful. I am also excited to develop my own knowledge throughout the process and hopefully use these skills in other areas of Africa in future.
I need to raise £800 before my departure to allow VSO to continue to make positive change within the communities they work. You can check out their amazing work and list of opportunities here: http://www.vso.org.uk/
Any donation, no matter how small really will make the difference. From my previous trips I can honestly assure you that literally every penny will help improve the lives of those less privileged than ourselves.
Thank you!
Emma :)
