Story

I decided to take up the challenge of running the Virgin London Marathon 2011 after seeing my good friends John & Kate Hibbs run the VLM 2010.  I am running for the West Midlands Lupus Group as John's sister Viki suffers from the disease.

Until recently I hadn't even run a mile, but now as my training begins I find myself reaching new goals everyday.

On July 17th myself and my good friend Kate Hibbs set up a cake stall at cannock carnival, after 2 days of baking i was ready and excited to sell my creations for a fantastic charity, we arrived at 8.30am and set up a colourful stall with everything from cookies to carrot cake, it immediatley attracted the attention of nearby work men and local elderly shoppers, after setting up the stall completely we were ready to sell, we didnt sell in singles which i thought would happen, customers just couldnt resist the tasty, colourful looking cupcakes and the delicious cookies. we were very happy with the success the stall brought, after a long but fun day we packed away leaving only 6 unsold cakes :-D and a pot containing £87.40p, we are very happy with what we raised and glad it will help towards the care and support of Lupus patients....I cannot wait to do it all over again :-)

LUPUS UK is the only national registered charity supporting people with systemic lupus and discoid lupus and assisting those approaching diagnosis. LUPUS UK also produces an informative national magazine with lupus articles, letters, reports, and photographs, and operates a strong Grant Programme for research purposes and welfare.

Lupus causes the bodies immune system to go into overdrive and starts to attack itself. It is believed that over 50,000 people throughout the UK suffer with Lupus of whom 90% are female. The symptoms are many and varied, and the condition often seem to mimic other diseases. This gives rise to difficulty in diagnosis and the condition can be overlooked, sometime for years, unless the GP or consultant is alert to the possibility of LUPUS.

Symptoms can include: extreme fatigue, eye problems, joint/muscle pain, depression, miscarriage, hair loss, anaemia, facial and other rashes as well as the possible involvement of kidneys, heart, lungs or brain. There is NO CURE and patients are likely to remain under medical care with continuing medication. Lupus can adversely affect the lives of patients, their families, collegues and friends.
