On the 21st July 2014, I received a liver transplant that saved my life.
I'd been in Portugal working as a sports therapist for the Welsh athletics team when I suffered acute liver failure. The doctors still don't really know why my liver failed, but after rushing me to hospital with stabbing pains in my abdomen, I went downhill….fast. One week, three operations and a new liver later, I came out of my coma in a Lisbon hospital with my mum and husband next to me. It took almost a year to completely recover, but before long I was learning to walk, run and sprint again.
Since my transplant I have truly embraced being a Transplant athlete, and at my first Games in 2015 I came away with six gold medals, having broken four world championship records in the sprints and jumps. Two years later in 2017 I came away with another six medals, further breaking my own 100m world championship record.
In 2019, we are set to have a home World Games, with Newcastle and Gateshead jointly hosting the Games in August. I have accepted my invitation to be the women's captain of the British team, but I am looking for help getting there. Competing for Britain is completely self funded, and we are required to cover all our own accommodation, registration and travel costs for both the Games and the required training days. We also have to cover our own training facility costs, kit and any physiotherapy required. This is in the region of £2000.
If this is something you could help with, it would be incredibly appreciated.
Although I am raising funds to cover my own expenses associated with attending the World Transplant Games in Newcastle, if I am lucky enough to receive any surplus funds, this will go towards the Transplant Sport UK Management Team (including physios and coaches) who give up their own time to support the team.
