We are a 24 hour search & rescue service to save lives at sea

Story

Sometimes in life we just need to embrace the crazy and this is one of those times. I have therefore decided to do just that and raise money for my favourite charity.

April 17th 2021 – I don't think I will ever forget this date! The day I shaved my head for the RNLI. Thank-you to everyone for supporting me. I am humbled by the donations that have come in, from friends, friends of the RNLI, friends of individual Lifeboat Stations and complete strangers, this has truly touched me. The folks at Penlee Lifeboat – particularly Elaine (Press Offier) and Patch (Coxswain) were wonderful at promoting the station to win enough votes to win half the pot raised and do the shave itself, they organised the day and made me feel very welcome. A huge thank-you to Becky Cornish of the Cornish Barber who very kindly did the deed, I was grateful to have a professional hairdresser undertake the task although I must thank my good friend Zora as she was backup to do this as a virtual shave if I hadn’t been able to travel! It has been a week since the shave and some more donations have come in which is amazing, I am almost double my original target so again, thankyou all so much! If you haven’t seen the video, check out Penlee Lifeboat fb page or mine (their video is better in my humble opinion!) https://fb.watch/55vi2u7Ixc/

16.03.2021 Update re head shave: I had a lovely chat with Penlee Lifeboat this morning and we are keeping everything crossed for the weekend of the 17 April. To all of you who have supported me and donated, thankyou for bearing with me, I am so keen to get it done however it must of course be under covid secure conditions and the station would very much like to do the shave rather than it being done virtually.😊

*** UPDATE15.02.2021: VOTING HAS BEEN CLOSED...PENLEE IS THE WINNER. I am talking with the station about the shave! They will also receive half the funds raised ....you can of course still donate if you would like to  ;-) ***.

I have been in, on or around the water since a very young age, sailing, playing and swimming and for me, like many of us, the RNLI have been a stalwart presence, looking out for those of us who work or play in or on the Sea. We hope that we never need their help. There are also those who are blissfully unaware of their existence - until they are needed.

95% of their personnel are volunteers, available 24/7, 365. Lifeboats, Lifeguards, Search and Rescue, drowning prevention and much more.

This year has seen a 52% increase in incidents involving swimming alone as more people have ventured into the wonderful world of open water swimming and specifically sea swimming which has put more pressure on this organisation whilst they are impacted by a huge drop in fundraising income (re C-19).

So, please donate to this cause - whether you think I am crazy or not - they are a very worthwhile cause. Thank-you.

(travel to a Station is of course subject to C19 restrictions)

From the RNLI:

Too many people are still drowning. More than ever we need the RNLI’s help. As a charity, the RNLI depends on our donations so it can go on saving lives and keeping us and our loved ones safe. RNLI lifesavers are our lifeline. They’re the lifeboat crews who provide 24-hour search and rescue right around the UK and Ireland. The lifeguards keeping watch on 240 of the busiest beaches in the UK and Channel Islands. And the RNLI safety teams and educators working tirelessly to stop people getting into trouble in the first place.Thank you.
