Story
My daughter Alice has always loved rainforests, the natural world and all the species in them: especially sloths, manatees, butterflies, jaguars, monkeys, hummingbirds, and toucans. As she has learned about threats to the natural world, she has wanted to help protect habitats and the animals that live there.
By taking part in Steve Backshall's Operation Ocelot, she will be aiming to save an area of the Laguna Grande in Guatemala the same size as her school playground - 4900 metres squared.
Laguna Grande is an area of forests, lagoons, wetlands and mangroves in Caribbean Guatemala that's under serious threat from logging. More than 700 species live there, including West Indian Manatees, Jaguars, Ocelots, Yucatan Black Howler Monkeys and Central American Spider Monkeys.
By protecting forests and mangroves we will also be helping to lock up the carbon that is fuelling climate change, as well as supporting the community in one of the poorest regions in Guatemala.
To raise money, Alice will be walking 10k, as well as completing a nature spotting challenge to document 50 different species over the next few weeks.
Please support her challenge if you can. Even a small amount can make a big difference.
