I’m going to jump out of a plane on 18 Match 2022 because in February 2021 I thought my world had collapsed. My beautiful daughter Poppy, then 14, was diagnosed with a rare primary bone cancer, a Ewings Sarcoma. After 7 long months of intense chemotherapy & Proton beam treatment she is now in remission.
The day we were first told that she had a tumour, before diagnosis, we were introduced to our community nurse, Jenny. In a world of shock & the unknown Jenny was so calm, supportive & caring.
Literally from minute 1 I felt completely at ease with Jenny and she has been there for all of us all the way through this journey. She has listened to my frustrations & supported me from afar. She got to know us all & I really don’t think we’d have got through this as smoothly without her guidance & support. We have a lifelong friend in Jenny.
Further to that we also met Siobhan, our social worker, during our first visit to Bristol Royal Childrens Hospital. The distance has meant that we’ve not seen her much but she’s kept in touch by phone & email constantly.
When we started to realise the enormity of how much cancer costs Siobhan was there for us. Having treatment for cancer costs about the same as being on a constant self catering holiday, but instead of all those meals in restaurants & gifts bought in theme parks you swap it for the cost of ready meals, takeaways, coffee & cake to keep you going, home comforts to make hospital stays bearable & treats to get your daughter through the most awful treatment regime. Fuel & transport to get you from a to b & even wheelchairs & new clothes that are needed. Siobhan found us grants & charities to help us obtain a wheelchair as well as taking care of my well-being & making sure I was ok. She’s been there for me through some really tough times.
Both of these wonderful people work for Young Lives Vs Cancer. Me & Poppy would’ve been lost without them.
Poppy has shown the most amazing strength & courage throughout her treatment. She’s got through this with such determination & I am so proud of her. She’s faced things that no child should ever have to go through.
My oldest son decided he was going to do a skydive for a different cancer charity. I’m absolutely petrified of heights & have only started to go on rollercoasters in recent years. But still, I really wanted to join him in raising funds.
Going on this journey with Poppy has reminded me how short & precious life really is.
I’m pushing my limits doing this skydive but I know that if I have a fraction of the strength & courage Poppy has shown then I can do this.
So I’m going to jump out of that plane, alongside my son, & hope to raise some serious money for such an amazing charity. I want to make sure that they can continue to provide this support to everyone who needs it in the future.
