We harness the power of snowsports to turn young lives around

Story

Well guys, here's the challenge : Whatever the weather, whatever the conditions - the Challenge is for each individual participant to ski or snowboard a total distance of 150km over the course of 48hrs including two night stages. Anyone who knows me will know I struggle to walk in the dark let alone ski in the dark!!, however I am preparing to do this challenge to give youngsters the chance to take part in programmes based around the snow sports industry. Why?!, not everyone has received the opportunities I have received in life and sometimes we can easily take these for granted. This challenge will benefit young people by finally giving them a focus, determination, a challenge and create themselves a proper life where they have never been given this opportunity before. Possibly through this process they may go on to be tutors and pass these skills to others which will complete the cycle.

Snow-Camp is an innovative youth charity that uses a unique combination of skiing, snowboarding and life-skills programmes to support inner-city young people. Through snowsports and life-skills, Snow-Camp programmes enable young people to grow in confidence and self esteem, develop as individuals and make positive choices for their lives. Snow-Camp programmes also enable young people to reflect on the key issues impacting their day to day lives, and help them develop new skills to support their futures – particularly towards careers in the snowsport industry. Snow-Camp has grown steadily from 2003 and now works with at least 400 young people each year across 12 London Boroughs. Their vision is to expand Snow-Camp to other cities across the UK and benefit many more inner-city young people. See the website for more details www.snow-camp.org.uk

Day 1:

We've made it down ice mountain in the dark @ great speed, what they don't mention when you sign up is that you need to do time trials so you can be put into groups of same ability, I am now a proud owner of a green bib that blends nicely with my purple jacket !! + am in the green cruiser group. There is already competition developing between the groups, so bring on tomorrow !!

Day 2:

We started today with the knowledge that the green cruisers had clocked up more Km than the scarey fast group, there is obviously some truth in the tortoise and the hare story!! Our guide set the mission that we were going to clock up 80Km today which was going to plan until it snowed and snowed and snowed. poor visability slowed the pace. Soldiering on however we have now put some dry gear on and are going to happily?? hike through the mountains tonight.

Day 3:

In the morning it looked like the skies were going to clear but we still had a shaky start, to use someone elses words 'we were skiing like grannies!', the legs were burning but we still had a lot of km's to cover.  We battled on down lots of mogulled reds and a near verticle red that finally finished my legs off altogether, by lunchtime we still had another 30km to cover before we completed the challenge.  We decided to inhale our lunch and set off, the clag started coming in again but we persevered knowing that we were so close.  By 4.30pm the lifts were starting to close, we couldn't see an inch in front of us but we had made it!!, 150km Everest Ski Challenge complete!!  Our legs were done in but being real troupers we got to the pub on time for a wee bit of Apre Ski!
