Story
I have recently been offered a Team Leader role abroad volunteering in Malawi for 3 months with ICS Lattitude! One of the things I'll be doing before I leave in January is raising money towards the projects out there. I aim to raise £800.
I will be doing a sponsored swim between now and the New Year. As I am going to Malawi I wanted to do something relevant, so I will be swimming the equivalent distance of the width of Lake Malawi, 75km! Don't worry, I won't be doing this in the actual lake, but at my local swimming baths. 75km is 3,000 laps of a 25m pool so I will be keeping everyone updated on my progress by Facebook.
ICS is a government funded programme that sets up projects in some of the poorest countries in the world, whilst providing young adults with the opportunity to experience international development work.
When I am in Malawi I will lead a group of 18-25 year olds in contributing to projects aimed at improving female status in the Chilumba region. I will be working with an NGO called Determined to Develop (D2D) to empower women through having agency over their livelihoods, and being part of a strong group. D2D supports the groups to establish an Income Generating Activity (IGA), and lead community development initiatives. The project also consists of providing and initiating a small store to serve as an outlet for the goods produced through the women’s groups IGAs.
