Story
This year i will be donning a rather unflattering wet suit and facing my very real fears of open water to take part in this years Great East Swim (Alton Water, Suffolk) as part of the Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service team for the very first time!! The swim will take place on Saturday 22nd June 2019 and i will be swimming in the midday wave.
I’ve chosen to swim for Muscular Dystrophy UK as one of my friends little sister, Rubi, suffers from Congenital Myotonic Dystrophy.
Congenital Myotonic Dystrophy is a disease affects all the muscles in the body. This disorder presents itself in many different ways; no two people will show the same symptoms. About 9,500 people in the UK have a form of myotonic dystrophy, and at present, there is no cure for this.
The condition causes muscles to weaken progressively over time, particularly later in life. Many children have learning difficulties and struggle with speech, respiratory problems and digestive issues.
Rubi is now 12 years old and has overcome many past expectations. Despite an early diagnosis of never being able to walk, Rubi now
successfully walks with the aid of splints. She does struggle with her speech but can communicate with the help of Makaton signing. Rubi thoroughly enjoys school and has recently started her new high school where she has made many new friends.
Your donation will go towards raising vital research funds
for Muscular Dystrophy UK. I am hoping that one day they may able to find ways of improving Rubi’s condition or, better still, curing it.
