Story
Why am I doing this?
So, this is THE marathon I have always wanted to take part in. Having completed Brighton in 2019 and Edinburgh in 2022, I was still chasing the ever-elusive London. Like many, I was unsuccessful in the ballot again, so took the decision to apply for a charity place and was so lucky that the lovely team at British Blind Sport (BBS) offered me one of their Gold Bond places.
As a smaller charity they have only 6 bond places available. The charities do not get these places for free, so I need to do my best to support them to help raise as much money as possible to enable them to continue with their great work. All of the funds raised for this event will be used directly to support people with sight loss and not on TV adverts or glossy brochures. Why not take a look at their Facebook page - British Blind Sport | Leamington Spa | Facebook - to see how much is going on and maybe join in?
Why BBS?
My parents both worked for over 20 years for Guide Dogs for the Blind Association. Understanding and supporting people with sight loss has been a key part of our lives. I also love taking part in sporting events and most weekends can be found sailing, swimming, running or biking with my friends. I cannot imagine not being able to do this and so this charity seemed the perfect fit for me. Sport for me is a powerful way to bring people together, to be healthy and build friendships.
About the Charity
BBS is the UK's only national sports and physical activity charity exclusively for children and adults with sight loss. People with sight loss are twice as likely to be inactive as people without sight loss and we need your help to change this. 2 in 3 people with sight loss say there are physical activities that they want to do but aren't able to. There are more than 350,000 children and adults who are blind or partially sighted and they need our help now more than ever before. People with sight loss are more likely to experience loneliness and nearly half report feeling isolated and cut-off from society. Two-thirds of people with severe sight loss are living below the poverty line and over 90% of those who lose their sight in their youth will never have a long-term job. BBS uses the power of sport to change the lives of people with sight loss and support them in leading more active, independent and healthy lives.
