Story
Thank you very much for taking the time to visit my Just Giving page. I have recently been accepted onto a VSO International Citizen Service (ICS) scheme and have been placed in Oshogbo and in surrounding areas in South West Nigeria. I am due to leave on 15 October 2012.
As an ICS volunteer I shall be working in a team with Nigerian volunteers and members of the local communities in Anoye, Odundun, Igbaye and Okesa, to carry out Participatory Rural Appraisals (PRA). This approach involves engaging the community in deciding on solutions and implementing community actions plans. I shall be involved in the planning of weekly meetings, community action days which are incorporated within Global Citizenship days.
Through our youth focus and community members' ideas I hope to contribute to the efforts of developing sustainable livelihoods. This work will be used in creating annual Community Development plans which will be used to understand better the needs these communities.
VSO ICS is a scheme supported by the Department for International Development (DFID) which puts young people from all over the world at the centre of efforts to combat poverty and inequality. My placement is three months and as a part of the process I have to raise at least £1500. This does not pay for the trip expenses, but conveys my dedication and commitment to the programme. It also aims to raise awareness of the type of work VSO ICS does, and what I will be engaged with on the placement. Fundraising will enable even more volunteers from the UK and from developing countries to become ICS volunteers in future and have a real impact on fighting poverty in some of the world’s most impoverished communities.
Any donations, small or large, will be hugely appreciated. I shall be updating this site as I find out more information on my placement, so please re-visit my page.
Many Thanks,
Emma
