Story
Years ago in 1989, at the age of 4, I had Leukaemia. I relapsed at the age of 6, and my younger brother, Mark saved my life by giving me his Bone Marrow. The treatment was very harsh in those days, I had intensive chemotherapy and radiotherapy, culminating in Total Body Irradiation when I had my Bone Marrow Transplant in 1992. At the time, I was privileged to meet Simon Flavell, the boy who inspired his parents, Drs. David and Bee Flavell, to create the charity Leukaemia Busters. Because of him, they have worked tirelessly to improve treatments for all Leukaemia patients, and hope to find a cure for childhood cancer.
I am pleased to say the treatment I had in 1992 although tough, did work, and I have been healthy for nearly 20 years. I have studied Animal Management and Zoology at University, travelled abroad on two conservation projects, one in Madagscar and the other in Shamwari Game Reserve, Africa..... and have jumped out of an aeroplane to raise funds for another charity Dreams Come True.
I worked as a Veterinary Nurse in this country until last year, until suddenly and without warning, I collapsed on 6th December 2011, with a stroke.
I lost the use of my left arm and leg, and the last 4 months have been extremely difficult for me but I am determined to walk again. Walking the Purbeck Odyssey will give me the chance to help others, and motivate me to overcome my disabilities.
