Story

"Challenges are what make life interesting.  Overcoming them is what makes it meaningful" Joshua J. Marine

The London Marathon has always been one of those things that I have wanted to do......and I now have the chance to fulfil this ambition.  I have been fortunate to secure my place with a fantastic charity, the World Cancer Research Fund UK and if all goes to plan I will be at the start line on April 26th 2015 with 30,000 others!

I have a couple of great reasons to complete the 26.2miles, so please read on...

Firstly, for those of you who know me, you will know I have played football for a long time, in fact it is nearly 25 years and this is the first season that I haven't really played (barring injury ;) In its place I have set myself monthly challenges which started in May 2014.  So far I have taken part in various challenges including the Bupa 10000, the London to Brighton bike ride, a sprint triathlon and the Great South Run to name a few.  The London Marathon will be the final piece to the puzzle and complete my 12 challenges, so I am very excited about this!

More importantly though, I am very fortunate to be running and raising money for the World Cancer Research Fund UK.

Each year nearly 300,000 people are diagnosed with cancer in the UK. It has been estimated that more than 1 in 3 people (33%) will develop cancer at some point in their lifetime.
So the most important thing for me about taking part in this amazing event is to raise money for the World Cancer Research Fund UK and contribute towards their funding of cancer prevention research so that they can help people reduce their cancer risk.

Sadly nowadays most people know someone or have themselves been affected by cancer.  I too have a number of friends along with my Dad who have gone through this terrible disease, so I want to dedicate this run to all those who have been affected in whichever way.  In 2010,  Dad was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer, Myeloma, which is a form of blood cancer.  Fortunately he is now in remission and continues to be in good health.  He has regular check ups with his consultant and is currently in a good place!

The money raised will go towards helping to find a way of beating this terrible disease.
