Firstly THANK YOU so much for taking the time to visit my page!
The charity I am raising money for is called Soft Power Education. They work with communities in Uganda to improve quality of life through education. It is an amazing hand’s on project and every single penny donated goes towards refurbishing and upgrading the schools involved in the programme. In the summer of 2010 I will be spending a month in Uganda, and taking part in one of Soft Powers current projects.
To give a very brief history, in 1997 the Ugandan Government induced the Universal Primary Education (UPE), the right for free primary education. However this led to a huge increase in the number of children attending school, which has put huge strain on teachers and resources. Soft Power Education works with the Ministry of Education and local government to achieve the second of the UN Millennium Development Goals- to achieve Universal Primary Education.
But, before we begin our month long project, we must raise £40, 000 as a group. Every penny donated goes directly into the project, paying for building materials, employing builders and any other resources we will need.
Here is an idea of the cost of materials that will be needed:
£2.50 will buy 100 bricks
£5 will enable us to buy a shovel or four litres of paint
£10 will pay the wage of a tradesman for one week
£20 will provide us with six tonnes of building sand
£40 will buy a load (8 tonnes) of lake sand or building aggregate.
£50 will buy a 1,000 litre water catchment tank
£100 will pay three teachers' wages at one of our preschools
£1,000 (well let's not be shy) will refurbish a two classroom primary school block.

In order to gain sponsorship I will be running the Sussex Beacon Half Marathon on 21st February 2010, which is starting to scare me! Along with other fundraising activities throughout the year, I will keep you all updated.
So please make a donation, no matter how small…remember £2.50 will buy 100 bricks!!
Thank you so much for your support,
Love Emily xxx
