Story
Hi everyone,
I'm sure many people who know me would be surprised to learn that I (of all people) have signed up to a long distance 10k run in the aid of cancer research.
Not being the fittest fiddle in the orchestra, this is going to be a big challenge, but one that I am excited to undertake knowing that any money which I manage to raise will be going to a great cause. A combination of fat knees and questionable lung capacity is not normally a winning one in this situation, but I will 100% make it across the finish line, even if I have to get Adam to stand at the other side with a dominoes pizza box as extra motivation..
I have already in my short 25 years of life lost too many of my family and friends to this horrible disease, and I admire our nurses, doctors, scientists, researchers, academics et al. who work tirelessly, and relentlessly to try to find a cure for this awful illness day in and day out. The continuously positive attitude and tenacity of the oncology nurses and doctors whom I have encountered over the last couple of decades has been second to none, and I admire their strength and selflessness.
One of the main people who I am running this race for is my Granddad, who lost his battle with cancer whilst I was growing up. He was my best friend, my football coach, my storyteller, and taught me that it is important to smile, always, even when your heart is breaking.
No amount of blisters from my Nike's, swollen ankles, or aching muscles could compare to the amount of pain that a cancer sufferer endures, or to what a nurse feels when they have lost a close patient, or the pain left from the hole created after a loved one passes away.
To, Abby Webb, gone way too soon and with a smile that could light up the room; Jack Farrar, a loving granddad, teacher and hide and seek partner; Paul Jowitt, a devoted Uncle, Dad and Granddad; Jane Tomlinson, a heroine in her own right; and to all of my family and friends who are still fighting the big C, or are caring for those who are....
