Story

In September 2023 I am flying to Berlin to run Berlin Marathon for Alder Hey Children's Charity. I have been so excited to share this and even more so to raise some money for this incredible charity.

I'm sure a lot of you will probably know my little Alder Hey story but for those who don't, please read below, written by my dad, Paul.

'On the 12th March 1997 Sally gave birth to our first child Emily. About an hour later I handed Emily to mum so that she could have a turn (a cuddle). Sally noticed that Emily was slightly blue. The nurses at Preston Hospital agreed so took Emily away for some oxygen. I went home, poured a drink and went to bed. Just two hours later I received a call from the hospital to say that all was not well.

I was at the hospital within 20 minutes to find Emily surrounded by an elite team of specialists deployed from Alder Hey Children’s Hospital. Shortly after, fearing the worst, Emily was Christened by the resident Minister.

Emily was born with a heart condition, that required immediate attention, so she was transferred to Alder Hey. Just 36 hours later Emily underwent 9 hours of open heart surgery to literally save her life. Consultants, doctors and nurses at Alder Hey pulled off nothing short of a miracle.

Emily has travelled the world and accomplished so many great things which wouldn't of been possible without the doctors at Alder Hey and she wants to give every child and the families at Alder Hey the chance and comfort that we got from being there.

Alder Hey Children’s Charity raises vital funds to help make Alder Hey a truly world-class, patient-friendly hospital for the 275,000 patients and families they care for every year.

Since October 2013, over £22m has been raised for a range of life-saving medical equipment and facilities that are making a real difference to families every day, but they still need your support.

Your support will help to develop better, safer medicines and treatments to benefit young patients at Alder Hey and children across the world.

“We’re not satisfied treating children using today’s medicines and technologies, we want to find the very best treatments we can. That’s why we’re working to develop the next generation of medicines and interventions that are even more effective, and safer”.

To support this vision they are developing a new state of the art
research and innovation facility that will enable Alder Hey to help even more patients like Emily.

Thank you.
