Story
In April 2021, I will be participating in the DARE challenge along with other students at Loughborough University. My challenge is in aid of the Meningitis Research Foundation which will help them raise awareness and defeat meningitis and septicaemia around the world.
This is a big step out of my comfort zone as I have never done anything like this before and I have decided to set this as a challenge for myself!
Meningitis affects more than 5 million people globally each year. Statistics show that 1 out of 10 people die as a result and 2 out of 10 people are left with an impairment like brain injury or amputation. Both meningitis and septicaemia are illnesses that can kill in as little as 12 hours and are responsible for more deaths of children under 5 than malaria, measles, tetanus, and AIDS combined. Anyone of any age can get these diseases but children under 5, young adults and the elderly are most at risk.
Students are the second largest at-risk group (after babies and toddlers) which is why, as a student, this charity appealed to me as a particularly worthy cause.
The Meningitis Research Foundation’s vision is a world free of meningitis and septicaemia, and where vaccinations can protect everyone. Their work is helping to provide better access to vaccines, health systems that can diagnose and treat children, and support to survivors of meningitis. By 2030, The Meningitis Research Foundation aims to have effective vaccines for epidemics and routine schedules in place to protect people most at risk within populations. With your support, we can help them to achieve this goal!

“Meningitis is ... something that can happen to us all, it invades every part of a persons life and leaves nothing unharmed be that temporary or permanent. It impacts family and friends and tests all those relationships to breaking.” – Lesley Hart
