Story
In September 2023, I will be climbing Mount Kilimanjaro with my housemate and a number of others from the University of Birmingham, in order to raise money and awareness for the Meningitis Research Foundation.
Kilimanjaro is the world's highest free-standing mountain, standing at 5,895 m above sea level (slightly higher than Everest Base Camp). The climb will take us 6 days, during which we will be tackling high altitudes, camping in rocky terrains, and sleeping at temperatures below 0°C.
The Meningitis Research Foundation is a charity which researches and raises awareness of Meningitis and Septicaemia, both of which are deadly diseases that kill within hours, and are responsible for more deaths of children under 5 than malaria, measles and tetanus combined.
The charity aims to help achieve a world free from meningitis and septicaemia by enabling better access to vaccines, improving health worker training, and providing appropriate support for people and families affected by the disease.
Over the past year, I have organised various fitness challenges to aid my fundraising. In May I ran the Birmingham half marathon (see photo), and completed a (very hard!) Tough Mudder, which I hope will serve as an incentive to donate to such an amazing charity.
Thank you so so much for all your donations thus far. I am so incredibly grateful.
Lots of love, Emmy xxx
