Story
Alzheimer’s Society is transforming the landscape of dementia forever.Until the day we find a cure, we will create a society where those affected by dementia are supported and accepted, able to live in their community without fear or prejudice.
I will be walking the West Highland Way solo in support of Alzheimer's Society, battling midgees, glorious Scottish weather and a slightly dodgy tent! I will be setting a target of completing the 96 miles in 4 days, just shy of a marathon a day, starting on the 23rd August. The route starts in Milngavie north of Glasgow, and finishes in Fort William in the Scottish Highlands, travelling through Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park, past The Buachaille, Devils Staircase and Glen Nevis.
All money raised will go towards continuing the Society's work to reach more people affected by dementia, fund research and increase awareness. This cause is really important to me, with family members diagnosed with Vascular Dementia and more recently Alzheimers; both debilitating diseases, stripping sufferers of their dignity and independence.
In the UK today, there are around:
- 900,000 people living with dementia, with this number expected to rise sharply to 1.6 million people by 2040.
- 209,600 people will develop dementia this year; one person every three minutes.
- There are currently over 42,000 people under 65 with dementia in the UK, known as young-onset dementia.
- One in three people will care for a person with dementia in their lifetime, cutting their working hours or leaving work completely.
Alzheimers is the most common form of dementia, with Vascular Dementia second. Alzheimers is a progressive neurodegenarative disease, causing the brain to atrophy over time, destroying memory and thinking skills leaving the sufferer disorientated, unable to carry out basic tasks or even communicate.
