This year I am running the Great South Run 5K for my Dad, Paul Hazzard. 12 years ago my Dad had a serious heart attack which nearly killed him, he fortunately survived but unfortunately has severe brain damage. He has lost much of his memory, he cannot work or be by himself for long periods of time and finds it very difficult to communicate and be amongst groups of people. Life at home can be difficult and challenging, the best way to describe it is, your Dad goes out one night, comes back the next day looking the same, but he's not the same person inside.

Headway has worked both with my Dad and provides much needed support to my dedicated Mum. Headway provides classes and trips for our Dad to get him out of the house and help build up his skills base eg. basic computer and cooking classes. Headway isn't a large charity and struggles with funding, but without them, my family wouldn't have had any support.
