Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

On the 24th February I will draw non-stop for 5 hours to help Fabrica stay open. Come and see me putting my Renaissance training to good use on a long, big drawing!

Fabrica is an amazing place which has supported the Brighton and South East cultural life over the past 20+ years since it was started in 1996.

I started working at Fabrica as a volunteer in 1998, then a member of staff and freelancer from 2000 until now and I've seen it grow from strength to strength.

I was involved in setting up the Artist Resource with Liz Whitehead in 1998, the first library for artists' professional development in the South East, which I ran until 2004 and which was the propeller for my passion for information sharing amongst artists on the themes of professional practice.

As a gallery born as artist-led, Fabrica has always gone out of its way to employ, promote and work with artists in an ethical and friendly way, becoming a point of reference for the local and regional artists' community in Brighton.

It has brought amazing events and world-famous artists to Brighton such as Bill Viola, an exhibition I had the honour to work on in 2001 with the dearly missed Matthew Miller. Then Martin Parr, Elpida Hadzi-Vasileva, Anish Kapoor, Janet Cardiff, and many more.

I exhibited there as an early career artist during the 1998 Fabrica Live Art Weekend, a performance which threw the basis for my exhibition at the Venice Biennale in 2005.

In my photo above you can see me performing Gesture an early body-responsive piece in 2002 at Fabrica.

Fabrica has similarly been an incubator for hundreds of artists who started out exhibiting their work out in this amazing, magical venue.

The people who work and have worked at Fabrica have become close friends, in fact more like a family to me: Saj, Liz, Mandy, Katie, Lisa, Debbie, Matthew, Jamie, Kerry, Danny, Chloe, Phillida, and many many more. Director Liz Whitehead in particular has led Fabrica to where it is today with a fantastic team of volunteers, staff, artists and others who simply could not conceive the Brighton art scene without it.

It is an issue so close to my heart and I want to give back the support which has given me and countless other artists over the years. That's why I am asking you to help me fundraise for this important cause.

I will be drawing for 5 hours on the 24th February, donate and come and see !
