Story
Dementia is an illness that affects the brain, making it harder to remember things or think as clearly as before. Dementia can affect every area of human thinking, feeling and behaviour, but each person with dementia is different - how the illness affects someone depends on which area of their brain is damaged.
You can live a good life with dementia - putting your affairs in order early on, and keeping well and as active as you can will help you live independently for as long as possible. If you need help, don't be afraid to ask for it - from family and friends, professionals like doctors, nurses, and social workers, and organisations like your local council or Alzheimer Scotland .
Dementia doesn't just affect the person with the illness - it affects the people most involved in their day-to-day care and support. Whether you are a partner, spouse, son, daughter, grandchild, or friend, your role as a carer brings challenges and changes in your relationship. You don't have to do it alone - there is help and support for you as well as the person you care for.
The generous donations we receive enable us to provide:
- a network of Dementia Advisors across Scotland
- Dementia Nurses in every health board in Scotland
- Our 24-hour Freephone Dementia Helpline (0808 808 3000)
- Alzheimer Scotland's Dementia Research Centre
With your help, Alzheimer Scotland aims to be the foremost provider of support services and information for people with dementia, their families and friends throughout Scotland and to be a leading force for change.
88,000 in Scotland are currently living with dementia, and that figure is set to double in the next 25 years. Alzheimer Scotland is committed to making sure, both now and in the future, no one goes through dementia alone.
I am very passionate about mental health and have a lot of friends and family suffering from this illness. I am also studying just now to become a mental health nurse and feel that I am not just raising money for a wonderful cause, but I am also raising awareness. My granpa suffers from dementia and it has been very hard for the family to come to terms with. Some people are suffering alone and there is not enough resources out there to support them. Thanks for donation I really appreciate it.
