Another year - another challenge!
Ella was diagnosed back in November 2018 and although much of her day to day life is 'normal' - there is nothing normal about her and what she has experienced. Her bravery and determination never cease to amaze us all - and if we can just show one ounce of her spirit and courage then we will be proud.
Therefore - this year Claire (Ella's mum) decided on a whim to enter the London Marathon, having never entered before, and managed to secure a ballot place. Over the past few months, she has been training through the rain and cold - slowly building up the miles, and chaffing! With the day fast approaching (23rd April) - it is all becoming very real. She has decided to raise money for The Brain Tumour Charity to ensure her efforts aren't wasted.
The Brain Tumour Charity is the world's leading brain tumour charity and the largest dedicated funder of research into brain tumours globally.
As Ella's treatment progressed we realised what an incredible job they do educating, researching and raising funds for an extremely underfunded disease. Below is some more information as provided by the charity:
- At least 88,000 children and adults are currently estimated to be living with a brain tumour in the UK.
- Just 12% of adults survive for five years after diagnosis and brain tumours reduce life expectancy by an average of 27 years – the highest of any cancer.
- Despite this, treatments haven't changed in 40 years and research into brain tumours is still woefully underfunded. In fact, just 3% of the money spent each year on cancer research in the UK is spent on brain tumours.
