Story
This year I am a Ms Great Britain finalist and as part of this I will be doing a lot of fund raising. When I saw that Alex's Wish Charity had organised a fund raiser to abseil down the 400ft Northampton Lift Tower I thought 'I know who I can persuade to do that with me... AMY!!!!'
I text Amy and asked 'are you up for a challenge?' and she replied 'yes of course, anything you like, sign me up' without even batting an eyelid.
A little later we invited our mutual friend fearless Amanda to join us as we knew she loves a personal challenge. Raising money to fight Duchenne is close to Amanda's heart because she has a friend affected by the condition.
And so that is the story of how it came to be that Ella and Amy and Amanda are to take on their craziest challenge yet, dangling 400ft above the Earth attached to a tiny little rope, raising money for Alex's Wish. You might think 'wow what brave girls!' but the truth is we will all be trembling in our boots!
Alex's Wish has a mission to eradicate Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD). Duchenne which affects 1 in every 3,500 boys born. DMD is a devastating aggressive fatal muscle wasting disease which leaves children completely paralysed by late teens. Duchenne is caused by a mutation on the X chromosome, boys are born with the condition and it can affect any family. Boys are missing a vital protein and as a result every single muscle in their body is destroyed. It is 100% fatal and most boys are only expected to live until their mid-twenties due to heart and respiratory complications. If everyone keeps raising money to fight Duchenne then for the first time in history, this generation could be either the last to die or the first to survive this devastating illness.
