Shave my head for £10,000 · 21 June 2020
Since 1990 when seeing Sinead O'Connor video of 'Nothing Compares' i admired her shaved hair but at 13 years old I wasn't brave enough.... my friend shaved her hair afew months ago in solidarity for a family member going through cancer and it sowed the seed to writing this page......
Why Alzheimer’s..?? Alzheimer’s has affected my family all my life...I was 1 year old when my father, John Graham got admitted to a mental institution in 1978, he had Early Onset Alzheimer’s which we now know was due to a mutated inherited gene called Presenilin 1.. My father died in 1981, aged 42.
In 2009 we found out my eldest brother Tony, aged 38 had also inherited this gene and that myself, my eldest sister Ange and brother Chris had a 50/50 chance of inheriting the gene... following the family tree we realised my dad's sister Thelma and her daughter Wendy also had the gene which took them in their early 40s..
In August, Tony should be turning 50.. but on 24th Jan 2021 he lost his fight with alzheimers aged 49 after spending 7 years bedridden, lay in a nursing home in Wales, peg fed, unable to speak or communicate in anyway.
Chris, my other brother who lives with me, my husband Kev and 2 children Jess and Belle; is aged 46 years and found out he has the mutated gene 11 years ago. Chris is happy go lucky, ex-military and with the news cycled 16,000 miles across the coastline of America and Canada to raise over £100,000 for Alzheimer's Research and ABF (Army Benevolent Fund)
Chris is not a victim of Alzheimer’s yet, he is happy, charming and very much a glass half full kind of guy and his fitness and positive attitude has helped him still live an independent life and if you asked him.. He says that he will beat Dementia…..which we pray to God he is right...
So as a family we've supported Alzheimer’s charities in numerous ways and just looking on my just giving page ive previousky raised over £2000 for the Alzheimer’s Society.
Shaving my head does give me a little apprehension as well as excitement and I wouldn't do it without raising money for this great cause...
The target is high although however long it takes if i raise £10,000 or over (which would be amazing) I will shave all my hair off .
In the word of Chris, my amazing brother 'What could possibly go wrong!!!!'
