Story
Mum and I are going to be taking part in the 'A day in her food' campaign set up by The Hunger Project. The aim of the campaign is to raise awareness and money for woman living in poverty. Women so often go without in favour of feeding their families, especially in times of crisis, however less than 10% of the worlds population are suffering from starvation or famine; the remaining 90% are enduring Chronic Hunger- that's an estimated 795 million people that are dealing with a lack of food, lack of nutrients and lack of variety day in and day out. The reality of poverty in the world today is harrowing, we see poverty on a day-day basis. We as a society have became numb to the needs of others and of the world, expecting somebody else to deal with it as its not our problem when in fact it is. We are all responsible for our own actions in the world and I really feel it on my heart that we are called to do more than sit and watch people suffering purely through no fault of their own- geography and circumstance.
According to the UN, 60% of the world’s hungry are women and girls. Some cultural traditions mean that women eat last, and when crisis strikes, women will sacrifice their food consumption entirely to make sure other members of the family are fed. The campaign aims to highlight the disproportionate effect that hunger has on women, and also that through empowering women and providing them the means to escape poverty the whole community may benefit.
Mum and I are going to be eating the same food as a woman in Poverty in the Andes for 5 days, our daily food allowance will be:
6 potatoes, 150g Bulgar Wheat, 1 1/2 carrots, 1 corn on the cob, 1/2 tbsp. onion & 1/2 tbsp. chopped tomatoes.
We have a set menu for each meal of the day and for each of the 5 days we will be eating the same thing; by doing this we will be reminiscent of the women in Peru who don't have the luxury of choosing different meals each day.
All funds raised from A Day in Her Food go to The Hunger Project, to support our work empowering women and men to end their own hunger, for good.
If you feel called to donate to this cause, please sponsor us. Please also keep us in your prayers because this is going to be a toughie, both physically and mentally. :)
Much love :) xox
