Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page. Please help us raise money for this amazing life changing charity and wish us luck!!! Eeeeeeekkkkkkkk!

Why are we doing this?

Macey is a young carer  - she has been caring for her brother all her life  - it was only at the age of 11 that the impact of this role started to be apparent.  Macey supports her Mum to look after her older brother who has Downes Syndrome and Autism.   Macey is mum’s superstar in the house  - she knows Macey is as much a carer for mum’s wellbeing and mental health as she is for her brother’s physical and emotional needs.   They work well together as a unit but Macey started to experience isolation and loneliness in school, as she wasn’t really able to invest time in friendships or in her own interests.  She felt she wasn’t like everyone else  - the guilt of these feelings was as bad as the thoughts themselves.  Scarborough & Ryedale Carer Resource made contact with the family following a referral from Macey’s school. Having met mum and Macey,  our support workers have worked with them both, together and individually to develop their confidence and skills to find a better balance in their lives.  Caring can sometimes become overwhelming; for Maisy our support was about helping her to find her voice and giving her some space to discover her own interests and ambitions.  She now attends our young carer youth club and spoke at a conference on our behalf a few months ago - she talked about how her caring role had previously defined her - not any more, Macey loves the part of her life that is about supporting mum and caring for her brother - but she now equally loves the part that is about time for herself and her growing group of friends.

Adult Carer in her own words - My life before I was introduced to caring with confidence was very stressful and depressing, also very very lonely. With nothing to do but care for my son, who is very demanding. I often stayed in bed all day trying to hide from the world. All I felt that I had to live for was my son and I could not let him know how I felt because of his illness and mental health. He relies on me and thinks I can cope with anything. I had no one to turn to, family or friends. Since I have been going to the sessions with Carers Resource I have grown more confident with myself which in turn has helped me cope better with my son. I am able to deal with him better because I feel stronger, I could not have done it with our Carers Resource. Sometimes I feel withdrawn and don’t want to go out to the classes but I make myself go and always feel much better. Usually I go home with a big smile on my face and have something else to think about.

About Carers Resource - For 25 years, Scarborough & Ryedale Carers Resource’s mission has been to provide high-quality information, advice and support to unpaid family carers within our local communities from the ages of 8 to 108.  Each year we support over 2000 carers to better manage the emotional, social, financial and physical impact often experienced by those in a caring situation. Our role is to listen, support and empower carers to better balance their own health and wellbeing alongside their caring responsibilities and everyday life. Most recently the organisation has extended its offer to include a range of different services for vulnerable adults within our community (carers and non-carers).  Our offer includes support for those experiencing periods of loneliness and isolation, those struggling to confidently return home from hospital and those wishing to return to employment and/or training.   In total this new extension has allowed us now to reach approximately 3000 per annum.  All of our services are free to our service-users, and as an organisation, awareness raising and fund raising are a constant necessity.  Your support is invaluable   - no matter how small  - as a local, small, not-for-profit charity, EVERY PENNY COUNTS!
