Story
Electric Island is an exciting new musical, conceived and written by Rachelle Rak with music and additional lyrics by Steven Jamail. This new developmental project shines a light on the journey of women working on Broadway. Every generation sees scores of strong, talented women that glide from show to show. The world might never know their names, but within the industry they become icons.
Adapted from the real accounts of women of all ages, ethnicities, and sexual orientations - this inspiring story illuminates how these performers have navigated the highs and lows of a life in the theater, on stage and off. This presentation will give you an introduction to the characters and some of their stories.
Rachelle Rak, having performed in many Broadway shows, understands what the life of a working actress looks like. She has been working on this project with her friends and colleagues since March of 2020 - when Broadway shut down in the response to the Covid-19 pandemic. Developed over zoom readings, this is a musical reflective of this exact moment in time, Her collaborators are the very kind of people that the stories in Electric Island are based upon. Art inspires life, and life inspires art.
Theater makers are being faced with unique challenges, and this show dares to believe that art will persevere while bringing theater to audiences, even when a traditional stage isn't available. This powerful group of artists will bring you selections from Electric Island while benefitting and celebrating the Phyllis Newman Women's Health Initiative at The Actors Fund.
