I only decided to run the marathon a couple of months ago. Once the decision had been made and the training was well underway, I quickly realised that this will possibly be the only marathon that I'll ever run! 

In light of this, I decided that I should probably try to raise some money for a worthwhile cause while I'm at it and I can think of none better than Alzheimer Research UK.

My mum Dorothy, passed away in December 2015 after being diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia in early 2011, at the age of  63.

Dementia/Alzheimer's is an illness that I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy. It gradually robs people of their memory, their ability to reason, their speech, their movement and their personality.  It affects everybody in different ways but leaves a trail of destruction in its wake.

My mum gradually changed from becoming a friendly, happy, loving wife, mum and granny into someone who was withdrawn and unable to communicate.  Eventually she became bedbound and was unable to do anything for herself.

This illness is heartbreaking to witness and there is still no cure, and no way of slowing it down.

Alzheimer's research are working towards finding a treatment and also towards a better understanding of what triggers the changes in the brain which cause the illness to progress.
