Story
The family and friends of the late Esther Spence are holding a sponsored walk in her memory on Saturday 29th August 2015 at the Black Mountain. Meeting between 9.30-10.00 at the National Trust Car Park for a 10.00am start.
Esther was in perfect health, and as she had done for almost 40 years, she walked to and from her work in the DHSS on the morning of Monday 8th December. Tragically that evening Esther was struck down with a fatal aneurysm. As a donor card holder, Esther was looked after in the Intensive Care Unit at the RVH for several days, while the Donor Team attempted to get a flight due to adverse weather conditions. Esther lived for her family: her son Joseph, her grandson Aidan, brothers Liam and Jim, sisters Margaret, Mary, Theresa, Pauline, Eileen and the late Janet and their families. It is of some comfort to them that Esther lives on in those who received her organs, and it is thanks to the staff of the Intensive Care Unit who cared so lovingly for Esther in those final days, that the Donor Team were able to save others. The family will be joined by Esther’s colleagues from the Jobs & Benefits Office, Kennedy Centre and Falls Road, and by their many friends, all of whom miss her every day.
All funds raised for the walk will go to REVIVE – the Charity for Regional Intensive Care Unit based at Royal Victoria Hospital Belfast – as a thank you to the staff on behalf of Esther’s family, for all they did for Esther, and indeed for their whole family during this sad time.
