Story
Between the 11th and 17th of October, I will be running the Jungle Marathon in Brazil.
The Jungle Marathon is a 200km (124 mile) self-sufficient race of 6 stages over 7 days . It is set deep in uncut rainforest outside Manaus, Brazil, in the Amazon Basin. The stages vary in distance between 16km (10 miles) and 87km (52 miles (double marathon/night stage)). The varied terrain will include steep ascents and descents, with river and hip-deep swamp crossings. Each runner will have to carry enough food to last the week as well as medical supplies and a hammock, so my pack will begin weighing just under 2 stone (12-14kg). The total race is equivalent to running nearly 5 marathons in one week, though in difficult terrain and high humidity. There are about 100 competitors.
I am running for Help for Heroes, which is the charity I ran the Marathon des Sables for last year. With the very generous help of friends and colleagues I managed to raise over £25,000. This vastly exceeded my expectations and I have a far more modest target for this race. Help for Heroes helps those in the UK forces who have been injured in the current conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. Every day there are more appalling headlines about casualties and injuries from these regions and if you choose to sponsor me, the money will go directly to the charity via my justgiving page.
You can find out more about the charity by clicking on the logo of Help for Heroes to the left. Many thanks for visiting my page!
Eddie.
