Thank you for visiting my Just Giving page!
I might be crazy entering the London Marathon but I’m running for Brain Research UK.
Last December, my mother-in-law had a subarachnoid haemorrhage (brain haemorrhage) and was rushed to St George’s hospital. She was a Physiotherapist who had worked in the NHS for 30 years, and as she was only 55 years old and a very fit and healthy tennis player it came as a real shock that this could happen to someone like her.
Research has enabled the development of less invasive treatment options one of which was used on her. This enabled her to recover with fewer complications than might be expected from previous treatments. She has made a remarkable recovery over the past 10 months from total paralysis in the early stages to living independently at home, driving, and just starting to be able to play tennis again. No one would have thought this could have happened to her.
Subarachnoid haemorrhages happen to 1 in 200,000 people and a third of them don’t even make it to hospital in time as there are no warning signs before. We all feel so incredibly lucky that Suzanne is with us today and I’m proud to be running for the Brain Research UK as this amazing charity is trying to fund the best research to discover the causes and develop new treatments for people who have suffered strokes.
