Story
Hi, thanks for visiting my page :)
I was about 2 years old when I first experienced asthma. It came on in the middle of the night. I woke up and I couldn't breathe. I was really frightened and my parents scared to death not knowing what was happening. They quickly took me to the nearest children hospital, where I got treated and eventually diagnosed with severe Asthma.
I do not really have childhood memories of not having asthma, an asthma inhalator was always with me, like a best friend prepared to help you in case of necessity. Light physical activities at the school playground where always directly related to some extra shots of salbutamol. I was having constant severe asthma attacks, triggered by a cold, dust mites, pollen, humid weather, sport activities, ... keeping my parents alert and ready to rush to the hospital emergency room at least a few times a month. The attacks varied in intensity, lasting from a couple of days till up to almost two weeks in the intensive case unit.
Not being able to breathe is totally awful, one of the worst feelings you can experience, something I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy and that accompanied me for almost 20 years of my life.
Despite all bad moments lived during those years, I was very lucky to have always access to a great medical care and disease symptoms slowly fade way till almost completely gone. Unfortunately, not everybody has the same possibilities. For instance, in the UK with 5.4 million asthma patients, what means 1 adult in 12 and 1 child in 11, only around 40% of them receive the required basic care.
Asthma doesn't only impact the patients life, but also their beloved ones. I can't even imagine all the suffering, anxiety and fears my parents lived during those years... How would you feel if your little child is at a hospital intensive care unit with an extreme life threatening situation and start to praying god to survive? Only think about it breaks my heart. With the support of everyone, I really hope one day nobody needs to experience things like this anymore.
Going back in time, I would haven't even dared to dream running a marathon one day. Now, I can't imagine a better reason to do so, running London marathon 2022 meanwhile supporting Asthma UK, a wonderful charity that works to stop asthma attacks and, ultimately, cure asthma by funding world leading research and scientists, campaigning for change and supporting people with asthma to reduce their risk of a potentially life threatening asthma attack.
Through Just Giving, a not for profit organisation, you can sponsor me and donations will be quickly processed and passed to Asthma + Lung UK, helping many needed patients.
I really appreciate all your support and thank you from the bottom of my heart for any donations #AsthmaLM22 #Asthma+LungLM22
