Fundraising for Hope for Children
Alex and I finished volunteering last march for Hope for Children in the suburb Moratuwa of the capital Colombo. The experience has been invaluable and fascinating. Part of our 3 month visit to Sri Lanka, the people and the children at Hope have given us a wonderful time. They have, as well, taught the both of us the importance of the small simple things in every day life, we take for granted back in the first world. Many of the children are very poor or mentally handicapped, or a combination of both. They have little or nothing to do once they finish school in the afternoon, if they have attended school at all. Often their parents are in difficult situations socially and/or financially, and often they are not around, especially the fathers. The Hope project in Moratuwa and its multiple projects around the country all provide facilities for children to play, learn and relax, but most importantly be happy in a safe environment. Whereas they might be otherwise left to wander the streets and alleys of the slums many live in.
Both of us have greatly enjoyed out time with HOPE and can definitely say this is a strong cause for children in a post-war country where its priorities lie in capital growth, rather than the welfare of it's poorer families and children.
Any donation would be welcome, we have set a target of £500 which will be spent on basic facilities and education of the children.
