Story
The British Transplant Games is an annual celebration through sport of people who have had transplants or who have donated their organs to help save the lives of others.
The experience is uplifting for all of us: children, adults,
donors and families and it is the little moments of joy like this that
help to recover from the emotional trauma of years of surgery and waiting for the call to say that a transplant can take place.
The confidence boost that it gives the athletes is incredible… and
contagious! Several of our teammates have gone on to win gold in the World Transplant games.
Edie competed this year in Newport along with the rest of the Bristol team. Our team is very small compared to some of the other teams but we punch well above our weight, bringing back a stack of medals against fierce competition from all around the country. What helps us is the support and love we receive from friends and family and the people of the South West.
Next year the Transplant Games is taking place in Coventry.
It will be a fantastic event with activities for all ages. The Transplant Games is a great way for people to meet each other and to prove to themselves and to the world that you can still compete after having life-changing surgery.
We are going the extra mile this time round, putting in team meetings and booking training days to get our kids ready to compete and to win in the games.
A bit about Edie
Edie, was diagnosed with End-Stage Renal Failure in 2014 and had her kidney transplant three years ago after several years of dialysis. She is now well enough to participate in the Transplant Games on an ongoing basis and will be competing with other members of the Bristol Children’s Renal Team, who come from all over the South West.
Bristol Royal Hospital for Children is a very supportive and compassionate hospital, place with really lovely staff, good co-ordination and first rate facilities. We're proud to compete on behalf of BRHC. It is well served by local charities, in particular Wallace & Gromet's Grand Appeal, who raise millions every year to help support the hospital.
Any funds we can raise will go towards paying for the team to attend the event, towards kit, training and accommodation as well as to enable the team to compete in future Transplant Games.
This is an ongoing fundraiser, so whilst it looks like we have raised a lot so far, it's been running for 2 and a bit years and has a rolling target.
Please help - your £10 could be all it takes to enable a child or young adult to take part in this wonderful event.
