I've never done anything like this before (and imagine I won't again), but after receiving a place in the ballot in late 2019, given the way the year had turned out, there was no way I couldn't take on this huge challenge as an opportunity to raise money.
Rewind to early 2019, my mum had just turned 50 and had some amazing international plans on the horizon to celebrate her big birthday. It was a year set up to be full of exciting times, but just two months later she was diagnosed with Breast Cancer and those plans were halted.
It's hard to ever imagine having to hear those words from the person you love and admire the absolute most in your life, especially when they are incredibly fit and healthy, and you're just 23 - cancer really doesn't discriminate.
Thankfully, after what felt like the longest 10 months of our lives, mum is all clear, but the journey to get there was extremely challenging for us all. There were endless appointments, prescriptions and eventually a successful surgery.
Having seen first hand the toll cancer can take on a person physically, mentally and emotionally, I am so relieved that mum is always so vigilant in checking herself. This meant being able to receive a diagnosis at an early stage and quickly starting gruelling but effective treatment.
After postponing my place from 2020 to 2022 due to the pandemic, I am taking on this challenge and raising funds for multiple charities who do fantastic work not only to find a cure for cancer, but also in raising awareness of the importance of checking ourselves regularly and providing support for the staggering number of people who unfortunately have been or will experience being diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime...
... And of course for you, mum.
Any support you can give me on my journey will be appreciated more than you could ever know!
