Story
Firefighters are true heroes. We know that. In a sane world they'd be treated as heroes, given all the support they needed and paid top dollar. This isn't a sane world.
The recent tragedy at Grenfell Tower reminded us that those brave men and women who walk into danger, for precious little money and for precious little thanks, are wives, husbands and parents just like those they battled to save.
While, quite rightly, lots is being done to support the surviving residents of the tower, let's make sure that the firefighters aren't forgotten. They saw things that nobody should see, they experienced terrors we will never dream of, and they carried on working because that's what they do.
Many of those women and men will carry those images and experiences with them for the rest of their lives. For some this will be too much to bear; their mental and physical health will suffer, their families will suffer. They will desperately need support, therapy and counselling.
The Firefighters Charity is the largest organisation working in the UK to ensure our firefighters get the support they need, be it physical therapies, talking therapies or other forms of help.
Do please give generously. If I raise more than £500, I'll take the beard off in assembly at school. If I raise more than £750, I'll invite in the donors to witness the event. If I raise more than £1000, I'll raffle the right to wield the clippers and travel to a location of the donor's choosing to allow them to exercise that right.
Now go for it, give generously and show our heroes that we care.
