Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.
We are raising money for the National Autistic Society because their mission means a lot to us. On 2nd July 2022 we will be participating in Colour Obstacle Rush at Chepstow Racecourse.
What is Autism?
Autism is a lifelong developmental disability which affects how people communicate and interact with the world. One in 100 people are on the autism spectrum and there are around 700,000 autistic adults and children in the UK. Only 22% of autistic adults are in full time employment.
Having a diagnosis of Autistic Spectrum Disorder means individuals have difficulties in the following areas:
• Social communication and social interaction
• Restricted, repetitive patterns of behaviour, interests, or activities
• Hyper or hypo reactivity to sensory input or unusual interest
• Extreme shutdowns and meltdowns
• Extreme anxiety
Boys and men are more likely to be diagnosed than girls and women due the ability to mask.
We have all worked with children with a diagnosis of Autism and have supported adults with Autism or going through a diagnosis of Autism.
For children and adults they can feel lonely and isolated due to the challenges of making and sustaining friendships.
To help reduce isolation for autistic women we are part of a Facebook group for Autistic Women in the South Wales area.
We are also part of a research team with Cardiff University looking in to what challenges autistic individuals face in finding work and staying in employment. We know that unemployment and stress at work has negative effects on both physical and mental health.
