Story
The Salvation Army is a registered charity and church working in 120 countries across the globe and is one of the largest and most diverse providers of social welfare in theworld. In the UK and the Republic of Ireland this work includes more than 800 Salvation Army social service centres and community churches. They provide support, friendship and practical help to people in crisis and need, working with children, the elderly, homeless people, and those dealing with drug and/or alcohol addiction. They also assist the government in dealing with human trafficking.
The building used by the Salvation Army Church in Menzieshill, Dundee is no longer suitable for their current programmes or their planned community outreach activities. It is hoped that the new building will act as a community hub, along with the community centre and other churches in the area.
I attended Dundee Central Salvation Army from a young age and, although I am studying at the University of Glasgow, I still have family ties to the Dundee Corps and elsewhere in Scotland.
Derek Thorne, a Dundee Corps member, is the oldest skydiver in Scotland. He has kindly organised with Paragon Skydiving Centre for me to do a sponsored tandem skydive from 10,000 feet to raise money for the Dundee Corps building fund. The costs of this have all been covered so all sponsor money raised will go to the building fund.
I am very excited for the skydive, and look forward to seeing the money raised go to good use.
