WHAT?
On 3 July I'm going to test my endurance to the limit by undertaking a cycling event in the French alps called the Marmotte. It's 176km in distance with 5,000m of climbing over 4 alpine cols (the highest being 2,645m) and finishing with a long, hard final ascent of a section often used in the Tour de France, and featured in this year's Tour on 14 July, the 21 hairpins of Alpe d'Huez.
At 45 I'm not planning on repeating this!! I've been training since November 2021 and will be immensely proud to just finish.
WHY?
Around 5 billion people worldwide lack access to surgical and anaesthetic care. This means emergency operations cannot be performed and patients do not receive the treatment they urgently need. This results in suffering, disability and death.
Safe Anaesthesia Worldwide (SAWW) saves lives and relieves suffering by providing appropriate anaesthetic equipment and training that is urgently needed by people in poor countries.
SAWW works to redress this huge inequality in anaesthesia provision in the following ways:
- By supplying anaesthetic equipment that is suitable for use in developing countries to hospitals in need. We only provide equipment that is safe, effective and inexpensive to use.
- By training medical and technical staff in poor countries to safely deliver anaesthesia and keep the anaesthetic equipment in good working order.
- By supporting research into ways of improving the safe delivery of anaesthesia in developing countries.
We work closely with local hospitals and staff to ensure we supply precisely what is needed.
