Story

DSP are on a fundraising mission to help Project Harar with an initial goal of raising £3000 (enough to provide 20 children with access to cleft lip and palate surgery.)  achieved we are now aiming for a goal of £10,000.

A DSP team have already raised £1,830 when they travelled across Britain when they cycled, ran, or walked the combined distance from Land's End to John O'Groats over the course of 1 month, with the £6,125 here we have raised a total of £7,955.

Who are Project Harar?

Project Harar are an awe-inspiring charity who have provided access to treatment for more than 8,000 Ethiopian children with cleft, lip or palate and complex facial disfigurements since 2001. Their aim is to provide access to treatment for 1,000 babies and children with cleft lip or palate and 50 young patients with complex facial disfigurements each year.

In Ethiopia, many children with facial disfigurements are ostracised by their communities, and most of Project Harar's young patients are denied their right to a school-place. Just a simple operation for cleft can completely transform a life. The patients treated by this charity return to their villages empowered to take their place at school, grow up alongside peers, and in time to have their own family..

Due to the stigmatization of cleft lip and other facial disfigurements in the region, those who are affected are often difficult to find. Part of Project Harar's work involves locating children in remote areas of Ethiopia who may be in need of surgery, building relationships with them and their families, and ensuring that they are able to reach a treatment facility to undergo this life-changing process.

Project Harar also offer nutritional support leading up to surgery; cover food, medication, and accommodation costs for patients and a guardian who travels with them; and often help the children with returning to school post-surgery, with the help of local programme officers and partner programmes.

What are DSP doing to help?

DSP have been moved by the stories and real life impact of Project Harar, and their commitment to improving the lives of hundreds of children. To do our bit, we committed to an initial aim of fundraising £3,000 for this amazing charity - enough to fund a cleft mission for 20 children - by the 2020 year end.  We smashed this and continue to fund raise which included £1,830 Travel across Britain challenge.

Get Involved : Upcoming Fundraisers

DSP are hosting a variety of fundraising events, challenges, projects, and games with all proceeds going toward our goal of raising £10,000 for Project Harar.
