"Without education there is no hope, without hope there is no future"
- David Rattray
KHULA Education was established in 2007 to honour the memory of David Rattray and continue his legacy of responding to the monumental challenges faced by children in accessing a quality education in rural KwaZulu-Natal. KZN is one of South Africas most marginalised provinces, where more than half of local families regularly have to choose between food and other essentials and unemployment is at 80%.
KHULA is responding to this issue through providing direct support in rural government schools where the lack of teaching and resources, combined with large student numbers, continue to create poor learning outcomes.
Despite being a small organisation, we have big impact. Last year, our small team supported over 6,000 children and 200 teaching staff across 21 rural schools, with programmes including preschool education, top-up teaching in Maths and English and teacher training.
