Story
I am riding along with colleagues from the National Heart and Lung Institute at Imperial College London ("Team NHLI" - https://www.imperial.ac.uk/nhli) to raise money for the BHF.
Team NHLI are a team of scientists and clinicians from Europe's largest heart and lung centre who work on a daily basis to find cures for patients with circulatory disease. I lead a research team focusing particularly on understanding inherited forms of heart disease, including cardiomyopathies, which unfortunately are leading causes of sudden death in young people, and of heart transplantation. Because they can run in families, a diagnosis can cause worry about family members too. Our research aims to understand the genetic causes of these conditions, and to develop treatments and ultimately a cure.
The BHF are a fabulous organization and fund much of our research, so getting on our bikes for a day seems like the very least we can do. Research at the NHLI spans everything from fundamental cell and molecular science, where we try to fathom how the heart and blood vessels work, the genetic and environmental drivers of disease, learning from modern imaging, big data and large populations, to the most modern treatments spanning stem cells to implantable devices. Please donate to 'Team NHLI' and support the amazing work of the BHF.
