Story
Summary
The Dream Renewables team successfully ran the Inflatable 5k in April to raise money for an intensive practical renewable energy course for young adults in Ghana. The aim of the course is to equip participants with a sound understanding of renewable energy, enhance their employability and prospects for higher education, and provide local communities with practical solutions which contribute towards the alleviation of fuel poverty. We are planning to run our first course this August (2019)
Our key partners, local NGO Dream Big Ghana and UK charity Dream Big Ghana Foundation, have extensive experience in managing a range of initiatives in education and development. By building on this experience and local infrastructure, Dream Renewables are able to offer this programme at low cost and high value.
We have recently secured partnerships with a number of renewable energy organisations, including PEG Ghana, SUKA energy and Charged up. These companies are running workshops and talks about renewable energy and the opportunities for employment in the sector, and providing sponsorship money to ensure the course is inclusive of people from all financial backgrounds.
We have also secured Partnership with KITA, an agricultural agriculture college who are advising us on the curriculum and also running workshops on renewable energy in agriculture
All the money raised through this page will be used to buy learning resources and materials required to build renewable energy prototypes, and to provide remuneration for local experts in their field.
Our team
Dream Renewables is a volunteer led collective of renewable energy
students and professionals from Ghana and the UK. It was founded by Barnaby King in 2018 with the mission to educate and inspire young people in Ghana about renewable energy through hands-on learning.
Each member of Dream Renewables brings different knowledge
and expertise around renewable energy, drawing on backgrounds in engineering, business and Development. All team members share the desire to educate young adults about the potential for renewable energy in Ghana.
The team is supported by a Ghanaian consultation panel which includes a professor in renewable energy, head of marketing for a renewable energy social enterprise, and the directors of a renewable energy company and a vocation training institute.
This panel is consulted upon on a regular basis, and their feedback influences the learning resources and teaching style adopted on the programme, helping to ensure the programme is directly relevant to the renewable energy industry in Ghana, and provides maximum benefit for the students.
The programme
Each week students attending the course will learn about a
renewable energy technology through classroom lessons, group discussions, and practical work. Each week then culminates in the students running a short practical workshop which is free and open to the community. These workshops vary from a fun education workshop on solar power aimed at younger kids, to a demonstration on fuel-efficient stoves aimed at home owners or small business owners.
In addition to educating students about renewable energy, the
structure is designed to also teach practical and transferable skills such as basic computer software such as Microsoft Excel and basic electrical skills such as soldering and building basic electric circuits.
