DRC Walks to AAIC · 25 February 2021

Please donate now and help us provide support groups to people with rare forms of dementia − FTD, fFTD, PCA, PPA, FAD and LBD − and their families, friends and healthcare professionals.

Story

The UCL Dementia Research Centre (DRC) is a hub for patient-centred research into dementias. As well as clinical studies and trials in Alzheimer’s disease and other common causes of dementia, we have particular expertise in young-onset, inherited and unusual dementias.

Colleagues from the DRC often submit their research to conferences, one being Alzheimer's Association International Conference (AAIC). This year, due to covid, attendence will not be in-person. Therefore, we have set the challenge to walk/run/cycle the 340 equivalent miles each to AAIC in time for the conference to start. Other the next few months we will be going the distance, sharing our progress with you, and raising money for Rare Dementias.

All donations received will go towards a new dedicated centre for Rare Dementia Support. The Rare Dementia Support Centre will exemplify how best to support those living with a rare dementia, through the involvement of its members and visitors in research and will lead in the bespoke education of families, healthcare and other relevant professionals. The centre will also pioneer research into the impact of support services on people living with a rare dementia: both for those with a diagnosis, their carers and families.

The new centre has three key aims:

  1. Support: guide and empower people living with rare dementias and their families
  2. Educate and train professionals (such as speech therapists, nurses, physiotherapists, opticians and GPS) who work with people living with rare dementias
  3. Research the impact of support services on people living with rare dementias: both for people with a diagnosis, and for their carers and families

Additionally, there will be dedicated space for physical, artistic and cultural activities. Live streaming of the education, training and support work taking place in the centre, will help to increase its reach and impact. RDS has collaborated with people affected by rare dementia to design a new digital service, offering support, advice and learning.

We have set a fundraising target of £500 and if we reach this target, then a further £500 donation from an anonymous donor will also be made to the centre!
