Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
Why?
In 2003, at the age of 47, I was diagnosed with Parkinson's, a progressive neurological condition that steals physical and mental functions that we all take for granted and never gives them back.
By 2016 I was unable to walk properly and suffered exhausting dyskinesia. I was fortunate enough to have pioneering deep brain stimulation surgery which involved having neurotransmitters implanted into the centre of my brain, connected to a computer in my chest and controlled by a mobile device. I am indebted to Prof. Foltynie and Prof. Zirinzo and their teams at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery at Queen's Square in London for their amazing skills in improving the quality of my life.
The disease continues to progress, but I can still cycle (usually better than I can walk!) and I want to raise funds for Parkinson's UK who are striving to find a cure and are involved in research to improve treatments. We would love your support in helping raise a contribution to aid this important charity.
The Challenge
From 4th-7th June my son, Fraser, and I will be taking on the challenge of cycling from the London Olympic stadium to the historic city of Bruges - each cycling 267km over 3 days - on what is sure to be a very demanding but hopefully rewarding experience. Demanding first day in particular - 122km/80 miles!
Fraser thankfully has decided to also take on the challenge and be there as my support and encouragement although there will be a medical team from Parkinson's UK with us all the way. 22 cyclists in total including 2 great guys I've met through our struggle with Parkinson's - David and Hamish.
We're taking on the challenge with one aim, to support finding a cure for this devastating illness that affects 1 adult in every 350 in the UK.
